World Funnel: How to Compare Different Tech Ecosystems in a Funnel

Benchmark locations and sectors by survival, growth, and success rates.

What it does

The Tech Ecosystem Funnel Dashboard is designed to measure startup ecosystems as funnels rather than just scoreboards. The dashboard follows the full startup journey—from founding through funding milestones, into scaleups, and ultimately to outcomes such as revenue or valuation.

In our Startup Demographics work, we framed this journey in three stages—Startup, Breakout, and Scaleup—and emphasized the importance of tracking birth, survival, and success rates rather than relying only on VC totals or unicorn numbers.

How to use the dashboard

To understand exactly how this works and how to navigate the dashboard, watch this quick tutorial provided by our CEO, Yoram Wijngaarde:

With the dashboard, you can:

  • Pick a lens (countries, metros, superclusters, regions)

  • Choose what you care about: funnel counts, conversion rates, revenues, enterprise value, or jobs created

  • Instantly compare locations to see where momentum builds—and where it stalls

  • Surface bottlenecks (e.g., Seed → Series A)

  • Highlight where value and jobs concentrate

  • Track how cohorts progress over time

This funnel approach ultimately allows you to:

  • Compare locations and sectors within or across geographies

  • Measure conversion rates between stages

  • Track enterprise value creation and growth over time

  • Understand the health and throughput of ecosystems

The Tech Ecosystem Funnel view in action

The World Funnel provides a global overview of startup activity and progression across the lifecycle. It helps you move beyond counting unicorns or investment totals, and instead see how startups flow through each stage.

What the funnel shows:

  • Annual startup activity → how many companies are founded and how many get funded for the first time in a given year.

    • In the example: ~58K startups founded, ~21K funded for the first time.

  • Pool of funded companies → startups progressing through funding stages (Pre-Seed, Seed, Series A–C, etc.) into Breakouts and Scaleups.

    • You can see the funnel narrowing as startups drop off or succeed in moving forward.

  • Outcomes → startups reaching major milestones:

    • Revenue outcomes: $25M+, $100M–1B, and $1B+ in annual revenue

    • Valuation outcomes: Unicorns ($1B+), Decacorns ($10B+), Centacorns ($100B+), Gigacorns ($1T+)

  • Conversion rates → the share of startups that successfully move from one stage to the next (shown at the bottom of the table). This highlights bottlenecks (e.g., the drop-off between Seed and Series A).

  • Comparisons across geographies → the heatmap below the funnel shows conversion rates by region (World, United States, Europe, Asia, etc.), letting you compare ecosystems side by side.

  • Enterprise value creation → total enterprise value generated since 1990, plus counts of unicorns, decacorns, and centacorns, give a sense of where long-term value and momentum are concentrated.

👉 This funnel view allows you to quickly understand how startups progress, where they stall, how much value they create, and how different regions compare in terms of efficiency and outcomes.

How this connects with Locations and Sectors dashboards

  • Locations pages give you how ecosystems compare by place — startup & scaleup counts, value creation, etc.

  • Sectors pages allow you to zoom into specific industries: VC investments by sector, sector growth, trends.

  • The Tech Ecosystem Funnel view unites both by giving you site-wide benchmarks and location/sector comparisons.
