World Funnel: How to Compare Different Tech Ecosystems in a Funnel

Benchmark locations and sectors by survival, growth, and success rates.

What it does

The Ecosystem Funnel Dashboard (part of Dealroom’s Global Tech Ecosystem Index 2025) helps you measure startup ecosystems as funnels rather than just scoreboards.

Instead of only counting VC investment or unicorns, the dashboard tracks how startups progress from founding through funding milestones, into scaleups, and finally to outcomes (revenue or valuation).

How to use the dashboard

To understand exactly how this works and how to navigate the dashboard, watch this quick tutorial provided by our CEO, Yoram Wijngaarde:

This approach allows you to:

  • Compare locations and sectors within or across geographies

  • Measure conversion rates between stages

  • Track enterprise value creation & growth over time

  • Understand the health and throughput of ecosystems

The World Funnel view

The World Funnel is the global overview of startup activity and progression. It shows:

  • Annual startup activity → how many companies are founded and funded for the first time each year (e.g. 58K founded, 21K funded in the example).

  • Pool of funded companies → startups move through funding stages (pre-seed, seed, Series A–C, etc.) into breakouts and scaleups.

  • Outcomes → startups that achieve significant milestones:

    • Revenue outcomes ($25M+ revenue, $100M–1B revenue, $1B+ revenue)

    • Valuation outcomes (unicorns, decacorns, centacorns, gigacorns)

  • Conversion rates → the percentage of companies that progress from one funding stage to the next (shown in green at the bottom of the table).

This funnel view helps you quickly see how startups flow through the lifecycle — from early fundraising to billion-dollar valuations or revenue.

How this connects with Locations and Sectors dashboards

  • Locations pages give you how ecosystems compare by place — startup & scaleup counts, value creation, etc.

  • Sectors pages allow you to zoom into specific industries: VC investments by sector, sector growth, trends.

  • The Global Tech Ecosystem Index unites both by giving you site-wide benchmarks and location/sector comparisons. For example, you could see how Health Tech is doing in Germany vs how Australia is doing in deep tech, both in funnel and in absolute VC or spinout metrics.

Example use cases

  • Ecosystem builders → measure how many startups in your city survive and convert to scaleups or unicorns.

  • Investors → find locations or sectors where conversion to breakout/scaleup is accelerating.

  • Policy makers → benchmark how your region compares against peers and track the impact of universities, innovation policies, or funding environments.
