LP Ranking

In this article, you’ll find an overview of the LP Ranking feature, how to access and interpret it, and use-case scenarios to help you apply it strategically.

LP Ranking

The LP Ranking view allows you to navigate Pension Funds, Family Offices, Fund-of-Funds, and other Limited Partners (LPs) investing into Venture Capital, indexed by Dealroom’s Power Law Score.

LPs are ranked by their combined Power Law Score, calculated as: Number of VC firms invested into × Average Power Law Score per VC.

The Power Law Score ranks VCs by outcomes in their portfolio. Outcomes are defined as:

  • $1B+ valuations

  • $100M+ revenue company

  • $25M+ revenue company

Outcomes are weighted by stage. You can read more about the Power Law methodology here.

    Why use LP Ranking?

    • Measure real impact – The LP Ranking focuses on real outcomes (revenue & valuations) for objective analysis. This gives a clearer view of which LPs are backing VCs that produce companies with proven success.

    • Better decision-making – For stakeholders, it helps to identify LPs that consistently support high-performing VC firms. Useful when choosing partners, doing due diligence, or benchmarking peers.

    • Transparent insights – Results are based on observable, up-to-date data (not just promises). You can see which LPs invest in many VCs, and which VCs they back, helping reveal LP strategies.

    • Spot trends – Tracking LP ranking over time can show who is rising, which LPs are increasing activity, or shifting focus, and can highlight shifts in market behavior.

    Interpretation

The LP Ranking shows which Limited Partners are most influential in shaping the venture capital ecosystem by combining two factors:

    • Number of VC firms invested into → LPs with a broad reach, backing many VC firms.

    • Average Power Law Score per VC → LPs that may invest in fewer VCs, but those VCs consistently deliver strong outcomes.

    • Combination of both → LPs that are both wide-reaching and backing top-performing VCs.
